Nissan ARIYA Successfully Reaches South Pole in Pole-to-Pole Journey

Married adventurers, Chris and Julie Ramsey, have successfully concluded their all-electric expedition to the South Pole in Antarctica.

Over the course of 10 months and covering a distance of 30,000 kilometres, Chris and Julie Ramsey embarked on an extraordinary adventure that commenced at the frozen Arctic Sea near the 1823 Magnetic North Pole. Their journey led them through the varied terrains and climates of North, Central, and South America before navigating the remote expanses of Antarctica to finally reach the South Pole. Notably, this marks the first time any vehicle, particularly an electric one, has completed such a monumental journey.

Across vast distances and formidable off-road landscapes, the electric expedition vehicle—a Nissan Ariya equipped with e-4ORCE all-wheel control—has surmounted the most rigorous trials amidst extreme temperatures and high altitudes. The vehicle, in its factory-standard condition with no alterations to the powertrain or battery, underwent modifications by specialists in polar mobility to fit 39-inch BF Goodrich tyres.

In 2017, following their successful completion of the Mongol Rally using a Nissan LEAF—an unprecedented feat for an electric vehicle covering the 10,000-kilometer challenge—Chris and Julie embarked on planning their Pole-to-Pole expedition. They understood the potential of such an epic journey in generating interest in electric vehicles, as well as in establishing a lasting legacy of charging infrastructure. Recognising Pole to Pole as the pinnacle of EV adventures, they transformed their vision into reality through dedicated collaboration and innovative partnerships with like-minded individuals and organisations.

Chris commented:

“I can’t believe we’re at the South Pole. After so many years of planning, it doesn’t feel real. I’ve always had full confidence in the amazing capabilities of electric vehicles, and I knew our Nissan Ariya would tackle everything thrown at it. But it’s been far tougher than I anticipated. I’m proud that Pole to Pole has reached millions of people in parts of the world and enthused them about embracing EV in their day to day lives.”

Allyson Witherspoon, Corporate vice president, Nissan Global Marketing, Brand and Merchandizing, said :

”On behalf of everyone at Nissan, congratulations on completing Pole to Pole. We all admire your daring spirit and passion for pushing the boundaries of electric adventure. It has been an extraordinary journey to follow and a point of pride for us at Nissan. It has shown how Nissan’s innovative technology continues to deliver excitement, whether on a trip to the office or to the Antarctic!”
