CAR Magazine Crowns Hyundai IONIQ 5 N As The Top Electric Performance Car Globally

Continuing its remarkable streak of success, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N has been crowned the world's best electric performance car by CAR Magazine.

CAR's expert team reached this conclusion after conducting their first comprehensive evaluation of hot EVs since 2022, testing them at Germany's renowned Nürburgring circuit and surrounding roads. The competition featured seven cars from various brands, including established premium manufacturers and prominent EV-only makers.

Despite competing against models with considerably higher price tags, including a hypercar costing over £2 million, the Hyundai IONIQ 5 N stood out as the top choice according to the test team. They praised it as an exhilarating hot hatchback reminiscent of traditional combustion-engined cars.

One of the standout technical advancements of the IONIQ 5 N is the powertrain, which offers increased power output along with improved performance in battery cooling and braking. The electric motors of the IONIQ 5 N can spin up to 21,000 RPM, delivering up to 609 PS under normal conditions or 650 PS when activating the car's N Grin Boost (NGB) feature, providing maximum acceleration for up to 10 seconds. It can achieve 0-62mph in just 3.4 seconds and reach a top speed of 161mph on tracks.

Additional enhancements comprise a reinforced steering column to enhance feedback, Electronic Controlled Suspension that adjusts suspension stiffness based on the drive mode, and a collection of advanced electronic control technologies within the E-GMP platform. Notable features include N Pedal, an intelligent software function that delivers instant turn-in and heightened throttle response for thrilling cornering, as well as fully variable front and rear N Torque Distribution.

The IONIQ 5 N raises the bar for emotional engagement in performance EVs with its innovative features. N e-shift replicates the feel of an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission found in internal combustion engine N cars. Additionally, the captivating soundtrack, which left a lasting impression on CAR's judges, is delivered through groundbreaking N Active Sound+ technology.
