The transition to electric vehicles (EVs) is accelerating across the UK, but ensuring that all drivers have access to convenient charging remains a critical challenge. For the millions of motorists without off-street parking, a robust curbside charging network is essential to support widespread EV adoption.
Addressing this need, Vauxhall’s Managing Director, James Taylor, highlights the importance of expanding on-street charging infrastructure and the role of collaboration between the government, councils, and charge point operators:
“Support for kerbside charging is essential to ensure that no driver is left behind in the UK’s transition to electric vehicles. Millions of motorists without access to driveways depend on a reliable public charging network. Through our Electric Streets of Britain initiative, Vauxhall is working closely with leading charge point operators like Connected Kerb to help councils accelerate the rollout of public charge points. Our national portal allows drivers to register their on-street charging needs, with this data passed to councils to highlight where residents want chargers installed. So far, over 12,000 streets across the UK have been identified as needing on-street charging through electricstreets.co.uk.
“In 2024, electric car adoption grew by 21%, and while the number of public charge points increased significantly—rising by 38% last year—the vast majority of the UK’s on-street residential chargers remain concentrated in London.
“Today’s announcement from the Chancellor, pledging additional government funding for kerbside charge points, is a much-needed boost for the UK’s EV charging network at a crucial moment. It is vital that these new on-street chargers, which are essential for those without a driveway, are installed in the right towns and streets where they will be most used. Our Electric Streets campaign is designed specifically to support this goal.”
