Renault’s all-electric supermini managed to captivate the What Car? expert judging panel with its cutting-edge infotainment system, competitive pricing, and engaging driving dynamics—a combination that set it apart from a crowded field of contenders. The judges were particularly impressed by how Renault successfully blended nostalgia with modernity, delivering a vehicle that not only pays homage to the iconic R5 but also meets the demands of today’s drivers with innovation and style.
In awarding the top honour to the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric, Whar Car? Editor Steve Huntingford highlighted the brand’s commitment to excellence:
"Given the affection people have for the original Renault 5’s design, Renault could have taken shortcuts with the engineering and still sold as many as it could produce. Instead, the brand has gone all in, creating a car that’s comfortable, great to drive, competitively priced, and equipped with an infotainment system that outshines those in much more expensive vehicles."
Renault’s impressive performance at the awards did not stop there. The Renault Clio secured the Small Car of the Year title for the second consecutive year, reinforcing its reputation as one of the best options in its segment. Judges praised the Clio for its generous standard specification, stylish and well-crafted interior, and its expertly balanced driving dynamics.
The panel also highlighted the value the Clio offers, particularly in its 1.0-litre petrol form, stating:
"Another small Renault that makes rivals look pricey—especially in 1.0-litre petrol form. In Techno trim and above, it boasts a smarter interior than most, generous equipment, and an excellent balance of comfort and agility."
Renault UK’s Managing Director, Adam Wood, expressed his delight at the brand’s double victory, emphasising the significance of the awards:
"The What Car? team tests and evaluates hundreds of cars each year, so for the Renault 5 E-Tech Electric to be their number one proves just how special this car is. With the Clio also retaining its ‘Small Car of the Year’ title, it’s clear Renault offers two of the very best small cars on the market, whether customers prefer electric, hybrid, or petrol power."
These accolades solidify Renault’s position as a leader in the small car segment, demonstrating the brand’s ability to offer vehicles that blend style, technology, affordability, and driving pleasure—whether powered by electricity or traditional combustion engines.
