Nissan has announced plans to launch affordable on-board bi-directional charging for selected electric vehicles starting in 2026. This initiative is a significant step towards creating a sustainable energy ecosystem.
The project aligns with Nissan’s business plan, The Arc, which focuses on innovative solutions to support the EV transition and generate new revenue streams. It also supports the company’s long-term vision, Ambition 2030, aimed at creating a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive world.
The Vehicle to Grid (V2G) technology will allow EV owners to use electricity stored in their car’s battery to power their homes or sell it back to the grid. Initially launching in the UK, the technology will expand to other European markets. Nissan’s extensive experience in V2G, with around 40 pilot projects conducted globally over the past decade, underpins this initiative.
Following a successful year-long project at The University of Nottingham, Nissan has become the first car company to gain G99 Grid code certification with an AC-based solution, necessary for supplying electricity to the UK national grid.
Under the Nissan Energy banner, the company aims to roll out V2G technology across Europe and beyond, offering both AC and DC-based solutions tailored to local infrastructure and regulatory requirements. This technology can reduce the annual cost of powering an EV by 50% and cut net CO2 emissions from charging by 30% per year for the average UK household.
EVs with V2G technology can store electricity generated by renewable sources like wind or solar and feed it back into the grid when needed, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Nissan’s AC bi-directional system, certified in the UK, will use an integrated on-board charger to lower the cost of entry, making the technology more accessible. The company plans to offer this charger at a price comparable to current mono-directional chargers.
Nissan’s V2G system will also provide customers with complete control and flexibility over their energy use through a dedicated app. This launch is part of Nissan’s strategy to create a fully integrated energy ecosystem, with zero-emission EVs charged using clean energy and capable of supplying power back to homes and the grid.
Hugues Desmarchelier, Nissan Vice President of Global Electrification Ecosystem & EV Programs, stated:
“The technology we are bringing to customers is a potential game-changer for how we view the car. Not just as a means of getting from A to B, but as a mobile energy storage unit, capable of saving people money, supporting the transition of our energy systems away from fossil fuels, and bringing us closer to a carbon-free future.”
Nissan aims to become a truly sustainable company, leveraging its diversity in the Africa, Middle East, India, Europe, and Oceania region (AMIEO) to drive locally-focused actions and scalable solutions for a cleaner, safer, and more inclusive world.
