Nissan and Ecobat Solutions Team Up to Repurpose Used EV Batteries in the UK

Nissan has partnered with Ecobat Solutions UK Ltd to give used electric vehicle batteries a second life, promoting a sustainable circular energy economy. This collaboration focuses on recovering, repairing, recycling, and repurposing batteries from decommissioned Nissan LEAFs.

Since launching the LEAF in 2011, Nissan has established itself as a leader in the electric vehicle market in the UK and aims to take the forefront in processing used EV batteries, a sector poised for significant growth. The Strategic Pilot Agreement combines Nissan's battery expertise with Ecobat's recycling knowledge to commercialise the processes of locating, transporting, dismantling, repairing, and repurposing these batteries. Additionally, Nissan plans to offer second-life products with an official manufacturer warranty, adding an extra layer of assurance.

This initiative supports Nissan's commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 across its operations and product lifecycles. Alan Low, EV Battery Circular Economy Manager at Nissan Energy Services, stated:

“We are working with Ecobat to engage with salvage operators, manage transportation, and assess how to test, repair, and reuse electric vehicle batteries to understand the commercial value chain. Although these batteries come from cars that have been dismantled due to age or write-offs, they still have a useful life ahead of them, and we need to establish a sustainable recovery process.”

Once identified, the batteries are transported to Ecobat’s Darlaston facility near Birmingham using specialised vehicles. At this site, further inspections are conducted, utilising Nissan's expertise to assess long-term safety and performance. This evaluation allows Nissan to identify suitable second-life applications, including:

                    • Battery Energy Storage Systems: For emergency power backup and power balancing
                    • Mobile Power Charging Systems

Since its inception in 2021, Ecobat’s UK Diagnostic and Disassembly Centre has processed over 6,000 batteries and graded over 14,000 modules. This year, the company plans to open its third lithium-ion recycling facility in the UK, further enhancing the capacity for battery processing.
