Hyundai and Healthy Seas Remove Over 170 Tonnes of Marine Litter in 2024 through "Operation Ghost Farms"

Hyundai Motor Europe, in partnership with Healthy Seas, has successfully completed "Operation Ghost Farms – Reclaiming Waters," a year-long initiative aimed at removing marine litter from Greece's coastal waters. This multi-phase project culminated in the Ambracian Gulf, where over 170 tonnes of debris were cleared, reflecting Hyundai’s commitment to environmental responsibility as part of its ‘Progress for Humanity’ vision.

The October clean-up in Menidi focused on a recently abandoned fish farm, removing hazardous debris that posed risks to marine ecosystems. Volunteers retrieved fishing nets, buoys, floating rings, a partially sunken boat, and onshore litter such as broken Styrofoam and household waste. This effort prevented further environmental damage and highlighted Hyundai’s dedication to preserving coastal ecosystems.

Michael Cole, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Europe, shared:

“Our goal is not only to reduce marine pollution but to empower local communities in restoring their waters. Through initiatives like ‘Operation Ghost Farms,’ we demonstrate our vision for a cleaner, more sustainable future.”

Recovered materials, including fishing nets, are processed for recycling. Suitable nets are sent to Healthy Seas' partner Diopas and then to Aquafil to be transformed into ECONYL® regenerated nylon, which is used in Hyundai’s electric vehicle floormats in Europe. Other materials are directed to local recycling facilities or repurposed by construction companies, supporting a circular economy model.

In addition to cleaning up marine debris, “Operation Ghost Farms” featured educational events to inspire the next generation of ocean stewards. Veronika Mikos, Director of Healthy Seas, emphasised the project's impact:

“Each mission removed harmful waste and educated communities about sustainable practices. Hyundai’s support shows the incredible results we can achieve through shared values and collaboration.”

This initiative underscores Hyundai's leadership in environmental sustainability, furthering its commitment to protecting marine ecosystems and fostering innovation in recycling and waste management.
