The all-new Renault Koleos is due to arrive at Smiths Renault, Peterborough in summer 2017 when it will become the flagship of the Renault range in the UK. Blending the rugged styling of an SUV with the elegance and refinement of a large saloon car while the latest four-wheel-drive technology and raised ride height give the Koleos all-terrain ability.
With many styling elements taken from the Renault Talisman (not available in the UK), which was awarded the ‘Most Beautiful Car of the Year’ award at the 2016 Festival Automobile International in Paris, there is no denying that the Koleos is a handsome car.
The New Renault Koleos features muscular lines and includes many design
cues associated with SUVs including protective door mouldings,
large-diameter allow wheels (up to 19-inches) and aluminium roof bars.
The broad chrome grille houses a large Renault diamond and is flanked by a Full LED lighting signature to make the Koleos instantly recognisable day or night. Taut lines on the bonnet and chrome accents running from the front lights to the front doors to enhance the elegance and premium feel of the design.
At the rear the Koleos features wide, horizontal tail lights – now a Renault trademark – emphasise the car’s width resulting in a well-built, planted appearance. Further chrome accents can be seen at the rear, including on the lower part of the rear bumper as well as the twin tailpipes, further adding to the car’s upmarket appearance.
With a high ground clearance of 213mm and approach and departure angles of 19 and 26 degrees respectively the new Renault Koleos offers real all-train ability. The raised ride height also results in the driver sitting 150mm higher than in a standard saloon car providing a commanding view of the road ahead.
The new Koleos is offered in both two- and four-wheel-drive versions. Those fitted with four-wheel drive feature All Mode 4x4-i technology, developed by Nissan, to provide excellent on- and offroad performance. This system is simple to operate with a single switch used to chose between 2WD, 4WD Auto and 4WD Lock Modes. 4WD Auto automatically moves the engine's torque between the front and rear wheels to where there is the most grip while 4WD Lock mode allows the driver to select permanent all-wheel drive.
It's not just off-road where the four-wheel-drive system benefits drivers. All Mode 4x4-i helps to counteract both understeer and oversteer by optimising the car's grip in diffcult driving conditions helping to improve stability and safety.
The New Koleos features near-best-in-class interior space, thanks in part to its long 2,710mm wheelbase, while the interior is made from high quality materials befitting of a premium SUV.
In the front, the tall and wide dashboard is covered in soft-touch materials and gives the driver and passenger a sense of safety and security while the cabin’s width and wide centre console mean the driver and passenger have plenty of shoulder and elbow room. The front seats feature variable density foam for added comfort and, on selected models, can be adjusted electrically, heated and ventilated. Rear seat passenger comfort is not forgotten with class-leading knee room of 289mm.
The quality of materials in the cabin is excellent with attractive, scratch resistant materials, such as satin-finish chrome accents being used on the steering wheel, gear-lever and air vents. The interior also features ambient lighting, to further enhance travelling comfort, the colour of which can be changed using the R-Link system depending on the mood of those travelling in the car.
In addition to its large cabin, the Koleos features a large 624 litre boot with several helpful features to boost practicality. The boot features a clever removable floor that creates a flat surface making loading large or bulky items easy while handles inside the boot allow the 60/40 spilt rear seat to be folded in an instant. You will also find an extra 35 litres of storage throughout the Koleos’ cabin, 5 litres of which is located in the centre console between the driver and passenger.
The Renault Koleos’ R-Link multimedia system acts as the control centre for many of the car’s functions including infotainment including Bluetooth media streaming, satellite navigation, hands-free telephone connectivity, radio and driver aids.
The R-Link system functions in a similar way to many tablet computers with the same touchscreen functionality including pinch-to-zoom, page scrolling, drag and drop etc. There is also the ability to download a wide range of automotive specific apps from the R-Link Store. For those who love music the new Koleos is available with a premium BOSE sound system which includes 12 high performance speakers for clear, rich sound quality.
R-Link also supports both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto allowing deeper integration between your car and mobile device.
The new Koleos also features a powered tailgate, a first for a Renault vehicle sold in the UK, which allows the tailgate to be opened by waving a foot under the bumper – an especially useful feature when your hands a full.
The Koleos is available with a wide range of driver aids to making driving safer and less stressful. These include; Active Emergenct Braking, Lane Departure Warning, Safe Distance Warning, Traffic sign recognition with excess speed warning, Blind Spot Warning, Tiredness Detection, rear view camera, automatic high-beam lights, all-round parking sensors and Easy Park Assist.
