The world’s first high-performance, all-electric car from Hyundai’s N brand, the IONIQ 5 N, debuted recently at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The IONIQ 5 N is a new way for drivers who love speed and performance to enjoy electric driving on the road and track.
The car showcases Hyundai’s expertise in both mobility and motorsport, as it builds on the company’s multiple world championships in WRC since 2014. The N brand’s winning DNA is evident in the IONIQ 5 N, which is based on the award-winning E-GMP platform that powers the IONIQ 5.
The IONIQ 5 N has several technical upgrades including electric motors that can reach 21,000 RPM and produce 478 kW / 650 PS. This is thanks to the two-stage inverter that improves energy efficiency and draws more power from the new 84 kWh battery.

N brand’s winning combination of technological know-how and motorsport experience is pushing the limits of vehicle performance, which has most recently resulted in IONIQ 5 N, a gamechanger for electric high performance. Key developments around this vehicle will further strengthen the competitiveness of all Hyundai models going forward. This is why N brand exists.
The IONIQ 5 N has a stronger body structure, reinforced motor and battery mounts, and improved front and rear subframes. It also has integrated drive axles that can withstand more torque and reduce weight, along with 21-inch forged aluminium wheels.
Its steering system is also enhanced for better response and feedback, with a higher steering ratio and more torque feedback. The N Pedal feature is a software function that makes the IONIQ 5 N more agile and responsive in corners, by using decelerative force to create weight transfer. The car also has N Drift Optimizer and Torque Kick Drift functions that help the driver to control the drift angle and initiate drifts more easily.
IONIQ 5 N has N-tuned brakes that are the most powerful in Hyundai’s lineup. The brakes have large front and rear discs with four-piston callipers and new lightweight materials. The brakes also have improved cooling efficiency and airflow. The IONIQ 5 N uses regenerative braking to enhance braking performance and efficiency. Regenerative braking is the main source of brake force, while mechanical brakes provide extra force when needed.
The IONIQ 5 N has N Active Sound+, a feature that creates a more immersive and thrilling driving experience for EVs. It uses a 10-speaker system (eight inside, two outside) that has three different sound themes. The themes are based on N’s 2.0T engines, the RN22e high-performance car, and twin-engine fighter jets. The sound volume changes depending on the cornering. The purpose of N Active Sound+ is to give drivers sound feedback on the power they are using.
The IONIQ 5 N has an interior that reflects the N family style, with N-branded elements such as the steering wheel, seats, door panels and pedals. The interior is also designed for track driving, with a new N steering wheel that has N buttons to set the driving modes and a N Grin Boost button to boost acceleration and fun. The centre console has knee pads, shin support and a sliding armrest for more comfort and stability. It also has a USB port, a wireless charger and cupholders.
The seats have enhanced bolsters to support the body during cornering, and N logos on the front and back. The seats are also lower than the standard IONIQ 5, for better driving performance. The seats have a two-toned design and are made of sustainable materials, such as recycled paper, sugarcane, PET bottles and leather. The IONIQ 5 N also uses recycled tire paint and recycled poly Alcantara seat cloth.
